Glitz' Guy of the Week/Year

Since it is the last Wednesday of 2010, I thought I would honor someone extra special. This individual was chosen after I read an article posted on ESPN Los Angeles' website.

Congrats to an everyday hero, Jake Olson. You truly are inspiring.

Kurt

The boys at work know me oh so well.

Kurt Warner retired which means, more than likely, Bretty Boy will follow suit.

Convo #1:
Me: Oh man Kurt-
Male Coworker 1: Warner retired
Me: Yes! Do you know what that means?
Male Coworker 1: That when Brett Favre retires and unretires the Cards are going to hire him?
Me: Um no. Leinart gets to start. IF The Cards hired Brett, I'd quit the team

Convo #2
Male Coworker #2 (aka a HUGE lakers fan): Hey Glitz. Did you hear Kurt retired and the Cards are hiring Brett!
Me: Really? Is that what you heard? 'Cause I heard that Kobe and Lamar are leaving LA for the Sun
Male Coworker #2: *walks off*

Funny how they know me oh so well.

I'm sad that Kurt is retiring, but I'm glad that Matt will get the playing time he deserves. He's toned down the partying, and he's working hard.

As long as he stays focused, I think Matt will be an awesome NFL QB. They don't just handout Heisman trophies to mediocre players...

Best of luck in the future KW. God Bless.

Down.

Down. I feel blue.

I shouldn't let a shitty (sorry dad) season get to me, but I have. Just when I think it can't get any worse, it does. A third loss. To Stanford. WTF.

But, these losses, make you realize that your team isn't always going to be #1. In USC's case the BCS will never let us be #1, but you get where I am going with it. I blogged about expectations at some point last summer, and I think that has helped me process the losses, but it's still frustrating.

Football used to excite me, with every W, I would get excited about the following weeks conquest, but now, I am somber and I just wait it out. It's like the tornado watches when I lived in Atlanta. We would watch- eyes glued to the TV waiting to see if a storm was spotted our way. The anxiety of the unknown.

But what sucks even more is, that my love for college football, has always surpassed that of NFL. There is just this different level of excitement for me..

Anyway, in this "down" time, I have neglected my Cardinals. The Cardinals who won yesterday, making the first Cardinals team since 1975 (I think this is correct) to win 5 consecutive away games. Congrats!!!! I also think it might be the first time in history that this late in the season, the Cardinals have the same record as USC.

Anyway, all this being said, I am going to make a better effort to blog. Win or Lose.

Hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Vent Fest....

Where do I even start? USC playing sub-par football? The refs screwing over many teams? Thank goodness I'm not a coach or I'd get fined for saying that ;)

The list can go on and on, but I will start with this. Sure USC has been playing sub-par football, but how can LSU and I will quote my good ole twitter bud @uscpsycho "LSU is only team in top 15 that hasn't beat a ranked team. Plus they have 2 losses. So why are they #9? Seriously...???"
Granted both teams have 2 losses, but USC has beat THREE ranked teams, lost one game to a team that was unranked and the 2nd loss was to a top ten team....explain that one to me?

I don't even think I can start on the refs. Not just the stupid calls they make against USC, but the calls they don't make when it comes to other teams...like UF. Calls that could have caused outcomes in games...sure the refs get penalized, but does that help Arkansas? Who could have WON that game..

Oh. ASU fans. Learn some respect, and learn to spell. Granted, I am not the biggest fan of Corp (3rd string USC QB) but I am not mean about it. At last nights USC v ASU game (if you want to call it that) some kid has a sign that said:

Anybody
But
Cullivan

Now I don't know if they were trying to be funny and reference Couples Retreat, but still..

Let's move on to my Cardinals. Surprisingly enough, other than Leinart's interception, there's no complaints there... :)

Had to get that off my chest, now I can enter the week with some serenity and a ton of hope.

Glitz' Guy of the Week

I am taking a different approach this week and I am honoring the NFL as a whole for their "Pink Campaign."

Here is some more information about Breast Cancer:
 http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/About-Breast-Cancer/

Also, if you are going to the Cardinals game this Sunday, please wear PINK and support Larry Fitzgerald's (@lfitzgerald11 on twitter) PINK-OUT movement! In addition, purchase a LArry Fitzgerald gift card at Cold Stone Creamery & 5% of the total value (I think it's per gift card) will go to breast cancer research. While you are at Cold Stone, Don't forget to try-out "Heaven Eleven" a pink signature ice cream.

The Football-session

People tend to ask me how does a Greek girl from Montreal love football as much as I do..

I always answer it's part hereditary and part destiny.

Let's start with destiny. It's pretty simple really. I was born on November 22.

Tail end of college regular season, about 3/4 of the way through regular NFL season.

Canadian football- my birthday was almost always around the Cegep Bol D'Or and CFL playoffs are  also in late November.

So I was born to love the sport.
Many of my earliest memories took place on the football field. My dad coached from before the time I was born, and coached up until I was about ten..

So that makes sense right? Here is where hereditariness (I made that word up) kicks in.

I come from a pretty traditional Greek family, and being the first born daughter, I was named after my paternal grandmother (aka Yiayia).

Yiayia had a son who coached football (aka Coach Dad) and a son who played football (holler at Uncle Pea).

One of my absolute memories actually took place at one of my uncle's games, and it involved my sweet little yiayia taking me out of Greek school early so I can go watch. I must have been about 8 or 9, and it was not ideal football weather- it was cold and rainy, and just dreary.
Despite our team having home-field advantage,  the refs were total jerks that day. (Keep in mind this is over 15 years ago). So I'm getting annoyed, and my yiayia is screaming "Stupid Refs" in her broken English, and that's when I knew it was ok to be vocal.

I actually love that my yiayia and papou (grandpa) come visit around Christmas because there is always football on, and I am slowly teaching her the wonders of my favorite team. She calls out the "stupid refs" quicker than I do sometimes! And you better believe that anytime I get a little heated over a game, I pull the "It's hereditary!" card.

My sister may have gotten the dancing gene, but I most def got the football gene, and I am okay with that :)

Glitz' Guy of the Week Wed Edition

This is totally a random one, but def worth the honor :)

To a super 'SC Trojan Alex Holmes for being very awesome and teaching me something new about my mac. You are a rockstar! For those of you who might not be aware, Mr. Holmes was on both 'SC teams that won NCs (03, 04)

Fight on!

PS: I am trying to get my 'SC fans all pumped up for Saturday's game. To rally up and support our Trojans! The GOTW for the rest of the week will be a Trojan...past or present.

xoxo Glitz

uh oh

I started this blog because I absolutly 100% LOVE football. Like seriously LOVE it. I get into disagreements over football, and I can be a little overly passionate...

That being said, twitter was the best invention EVER when it comes to me blogging about football.

Why? Well there are so many great players that are using twitter, and sparking GREAT post ideas.

It started with Nine-O and his great Tweets, and then my Cali Redwoods boys!

Can't leave out @Trojan81's tweet that sparked my Confessions... post a few days ago.

I'm rambling. Sorry. Anyway, you will be seeing a lot more love & thanks to players who are inspiring me to write...like sensei Mike Williams (twinjas for life)

the ohio state curse...

Disclaimer: I apologize ahead of time for any unlady like words that might follow...

The OSU curse. I do not know what happens to USC after the play and beat Ohio State. They get on the field and look like lost puppies.

Seriously, more than two interceptions?! C'mon guys what are you thinking? Aaorn Corp. I am sure the kid is a good kid. I'm sure he is nice, and all that jazz, but yesterday. I just wanted him off the field.

Somebody I was watching the game with made a comment, and I agree. You cannot put on an 'SC uniform and EXPECT to just win. You need to be 100% and work hard.

There was an article that came out last night that Aaron Corp said that he never knew he was going to start. If that is true or not....I don't know, but here is the thing....you should ALWAYS be prepared when you are #2. ALWAYS. Especially when Matt Barkley is injured!!!

I'm going to stop. I don't want to get overly worked up. The game is over. There is no going back and changing the outcome. There is always next week at home.

confessions....true love and broken hearts...(aka mostly rambles)

A few nights ago I stumbled across the Twitter page for former USC Trojan Alex Holmes which in turn led me to the Twitter page of his sister and brother-in-law.

Now if any of you follow USC Football as much as I do. You know where I am going with this. Troy Polamalu

So my Cards followers are probably thinking- this girl is NUTS. Hellooooo the Cards LOST to the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Remember that? Remember the feeling when Larry Fitzgerald scored THAT touchdown?! The feeling of pure euphoria. The THIS IS IT feeling.

So let's pause for a second, and go back to last night. I came across a video of Mr. Polamalu talking about faith. This is what sparked this blog post. It made me remember the torn emotions I was feeling during the Super Bowl.

I have something other than USC in common with Mr. Polamalu. We share the same religion, and watching him play in the Super Bowl (despite me REALLY wanting the Cardinals to win) was inspiring.

A lot of times, our faith is tested. People will doubt us, question us, and really put our faith to a test. Mr. Polamalu, really opened up my eyes that night. After every play (at least the ones when my eyes were open) he crossed himself. This is a professional football player....on the FIELD....AT THE SUPER BOWL. That my friends is true love.

Every now and then, I look thinking back to that night. How it opened my eyes. I LOVE the Cardinals. They are my team, and have been from the minute I moved to Arizona. Okay- it was the minute Leinart got drafted, and I KNEW I was moving to Arizona. They are a team that worked SO hard throughout the season, they pushed themselves, and I now once doubted their ability to make it all the way. In fact, at the beginning of the season I told Coach Dad, that they were going to the Super Bowl, and he chuckled.

I don't even know where I am going with this. I'm pretty emotional. I guess to sum it up, my confession is, that if the Steelers were playing someone other than the Cardinals in the Super Bowl, Troy Polamalu would have been THE deciding factor on what team I would have wanted to win. True Love & Broken Hearts...this goes two ways.

The first is relating it to football. I think you can truly love a team. I love the Cardinals, and I love USC. Loving a team sooo much that when the score is 13-10 with only minutes left in the fourth quarter....you are too sick to your stomach to eat, and the heartbreak....not caused by the team, but it's the feeling that overtakes your body when your team suffers a loss. we (well at least I) set ourselves up for this disappointment. We do it with guys. We build them up and "fall in love" only to get hurt by the tiniest thing in the end.

But most importantly, that Super Bowl restored a true love for my faith. A love that sometimes society can skew...and create a sense of shame, but it's about overcoming that shame. If crossing yourself on the football field during the biggest football game in the world, by one of the best players in the league, than there shouldn't be that fear of doing it in public- on a plane, before a meal...it's embracing that true love, and letting it not lead to heart break...

I wish I could thank him personally, but I can't. So I am thanking him via blog.

xoxo- glitz

PS: Just to make it clear. I am still INCREDIBLY proud of the Cardinals and how they played in the game. I still love them, and I hope they make it all the way again this year! xoxo

Hank Baskett...

I must say. I was pretty bummed when I read that Hank Baskett was cut from the Eagles so Mr. Vick could be "activated."

This morning I read that Hank signed with the Colts.

Good stuff!

The First Weekend

I have not decided if I am doing picks this year. Last year, I did well, and I don't know if I can tarnish my record.

Speaking of records, there was some AMAZING football on alllll weekend long. I was impressed with my boys, but I was also very impressed with another Pac10 team.

UW. They really held their own, and I remember watching them play USC a few years ago. I actually think it was when Booty was out, and Sanchez was playing QB...I was not a bog Sanchez fan then...

Locker was just impressive. It was an intense game for me, and that's how watching them almost beat LSU felt...like that game two years ago.

So my final thoughts on Washington....they will give some teams a run for their money.

Anyway, I am done. No blogging all week (minus nine-o Thursday)

USC Football News!

Matt Barkley was given the starting QB job as a true Freshman. Amazing. Thoughts? Comments?

Aug 20, 2009

Can you feel it?

Only TWO weekends left. TWO weekends! Factor in that the Cardinals play on Saturday, that is one more Saturday that is without football.

Then, it's off to find a new Saturday hangout to watch 'SC games.

Sept. 5....so close yet so far way.
